Badaling is nearest to Beijing and the most crowded. Mutianyu has the cable car, the toboggan run and space to walk. Jinshanling is unrestored, steep and almost empty. These three carry more travellers than anything else north of the city.

Mutianyu: cable car up, toboggan down
Ninety minutes north of the city, restored battlements along a green ridge, and a chairlift that saves your legs for the walk along the top.
The days people come to China for.
The wall, the buried army, the panda nursery, the canal towns and the karst river. Six days that most first trips are built around, and the best way to book each one.
Beijing takes four days and a driver.
The Forbidden City runs the better part of a mile end to end, the wall is two hours out of town, and the hutongs only make sense on foot. The capital is the part of a China trip that has to be booked before you land.

Xi’an keeps the army that started the empire.
Five hours from Beijing by bullet train, and the reason most itineraries bend inland. The warriors take a morning. The Ming wall, the Muslim Quarter and a bowl of biang biang noodles take the rest of it.
All 74 Xi’an tours →What a day out in China costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by what it charges. The bottom of the range is entry tickets and street-food walks; the top buys a car, a driver and a guide for the whole day.
The standard day out: wall trips with lunch, Terracotta Army mini-groups, water-town runs.
Days that only happen in China.
Old towns and temples exist all over Asia. The panda nursery, the sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie and the acrobatic stages belong to this country alone.

The Panda Base
Nearly every giant panda alive traces back to the breeding programme on the northern edge of Chengdu. The base opens at half past seven because that is when the cubs are fed; by ten the enclosures are quiet and the bears are asleep in the forks of the trees. Volunteer days exist and are capped at a handful of places a session.

Zhangjiajie
Three thousand sandstone pillars standing in cloud, in the park that fed the Avatar concept art. It wants two days: the Bailong lift up the cliff face and the Avatar Mountain loop on the first, Tianmen Mountain and its glass walkway on the second. The glass sections run on timed slots with a daily cap.

The Acrobats
Chinese acrobatics predates the Han dynasty and still takes children into training at seven. Beijing runs the classic hoops-and-poles version at the Red Theatre; Shanghai runs the newer high-wire spectacle at Circus World. Ninety minutes, no language needed, and the good seats go first.

Shanghai is two cities, forty minutes apart.
The Bund faces 1920s stone across the water at a skyline that did not exist in 1990. Then the metro runs forty minutes west and puts you in a canal town where the boats are still poled by hand.

Book these before you fly to China.
Most of a China trip can be arranged from the hotel the night before. These cannot. They run on permits, passport registrations and daily caps that close well ahead of your arrival.
- 01Tiananmen Square Registration Service(Ticket)Entry runs on an advance registration in your passport name, and the daily allocation closes days before most people think to look.
- 02Beijing Forbidden City Ticket Booking (Optional: guide service)Tickets are timed, capped daily and released on a rolling window. When a date sells out there is no window at the gate.
- 03Tibet Tour 8 Days Lhasa to Everest Base Camp Small Group TourTibet runs on a permit arranged by a licensed operator weeks ahead. Without it you are not boarding the flight or the train.
- 042-Day Mini Group to Avatar Mountain, Glass Bridge and Mt. TianmenThe glass walkways admit a fixed number a day by timed slot, and peak dates are gone long before the coach leaves.
When the plum rains reach the Yangtze, book indoors.
The meiyu front parks over Shanghai and the river cities through June, and the south stays wet into September. The good answers are all under a roof: a tea house, a wok and a market basket, a workshop bench, an acrobatics stage. None of them cancel for weather.
